Calders Factory

• Company Origins:
The parent company traces its roots back to 1820 in Scotland
and was formally incorporated as Calders Ltd in 1919.

• The Washington Expansion:
To meet the heavy regional demand from the coal mining and railway industries,
operations expanded to the North East, establishing the Washington plant
alongside other foundational manufacturers like Tube Products.

• Core Products:
The Washington and wider Calders operations supported the local North East
economy by manufacturing heavy-duty timber goods, including railway
sleepers, telegraph poles and pit props for the National Coal Board.

• Acquisitions:
The company merged with James Grandridge Ltd in 1945 to form Calders & Grandridge,

1963 was my last year at Washington Grammar School.
Does anyone remember joining the School Trip which visited Calders Timber in that year?
