Flame Safety Lamps

Methane Flames

In The Early Days of Coal Mining, Candles and 'Open Flame' Lamps
were the only means of Illumination Underground.

Open Flame Lamps caused Hundreds of Methane Explosions and many Thousands of Deaths.
Sir Humphry Davy FRS, and local Engineer George Stephenson, independently came up with the solution:

•   •   ◊   •   •

My 1970s, Robert Olley, cold-cast, figurine bought at his workshop on the Armstrong Industrial Estate.
It depicts two young Pit Lads each carrying their only means of underground light.
No longer a Dangerous Candle - now a Flame Safety Lamp.
Still no Cap Lamps & Batteries!
